Buying gifts for your friends and loved ones can be at once the most fun, and most maddening of activities.   If they are celebrating their anniversary, graduation, or even the day they were birthed, there are many gifts out there to choose from.  Many items that people might normally get as a gift these days are media-related, like movies, music, and books. Of course, one of the greatest challenges to any gift giver is to get something that the recipient would ultimately like, and not already own. In today’s media friendly society, it isn’t very likely that any gift giver would know the contents of their intended recipient’s complete library without asking, and by doing that they ruin the surprise.

This gave rise to the gift card. Gift certificates have always been around in some form, but were usually limited to a single store in a local area. The advent of the gift card that could be used in any branch of a major retail chain combined with the difficulty of buying a gift in a consumer society has made that option an explosively popular selection.

But gift cards, while convenient, aren’t very personal. It is almost impossible that your friend will compliment you on how thoughtful your gift is when you simply when to a retail outlet and purchased a gift card. What can you give a friend or a loved one that they will like, but without risking buying something that they already own? Gift Baskets!

A gift basket is usually filled with various consumable or perishable items that fit in a theme. The standard gift basket is traditionally filled with fruit, but the beauty of the gift basket is that you can make your own, and fill it with anything you want. And since it is typically filled with consumable items, even if you should place something in the basket that your recipient already owns, they will eventually have use for it.

So what should you put into a gift basket? Depends on the person. A woman might like bath or perfume items, lotions, or soaps. Men might enjoy something more food-related – meat, cheese, and cracker items. Of course, these are very generic baskets, but you can get much more specific. If your friend is a tea or coffee connoisseur, you can get an assortment of high quality teas or coffee beans, sugar, along with some hardware to go along with it like a tea diffuser, coffee filters, stir sticks, or even a mug. A fan of high quality alcohol might enjoy a quality bottle or scotch or rum, along with the appropriate glasses, cigars, and other accessories.

Gift baskets, for example Italian Sangiovese & Pinot Grigio Gift Basket,  are an ideal way to gift a close friend or loved one something that they are sure to enjoy. All you really need to do is know what the person enjoys, and purchase things to go along with it. It can be time consuming to fill the basket, but it can definitely be fun to scour the stores finding different items that fit the theme with which to fill the basket.

The gift basket sometimes has an unfair reputation as being a clichéd gift, but as long as you put some real thought into the contents, it will almost certainly be a hit. And if you are still uncomfortable about it, you can always slip a gift card into the basket to cover your bases.
